Final Recap of Arte 360

What an amazing time I have had in this class. I have dreaded taking this class since becoming a Public Health major because of my lack of artistic ability but I could not have been more wrong! I thought we would be drawing everyday or learning art history and the makers of different works but I learned a great deal about fun stuff and the various trips were delightful for a summer session! In order: Dance Lecture, Puppetry & Music were my top 3 favorite classes. The Palmetto Portraits exhibit was exquisite and the play "Hair" has opened my eyes to a whole other form of entertain for friends and myself. Dr. Heid I can not Thank you again for your understanding during my tragedy.

Movie Day

Today was movie day watching The Phantom of the Opera. I have to be completely honest, I loathe opera. Something about all of it gives me the worst headaches! Phantom of the Opera was definitely a great deal different however. Although I won't rush to see it again it was not bad or painful in the least! I loved the music. Opera music has always conjured up my inner musician. Although I do not have one musical bone in my body, upon listening to opera I've always had images of myself reading music as I play the violin. I noticed a few of the opera terms given in class as well and I love pieces notes to real life events.

How About That Hair!?

The class went to see Hair at the Trustus Theatre! & it reminded me of just how much talent we have in Columbia. It also gave me another great thing to do when my friends and I are out of options, going to see a play would be great!
Hair was not what I was expecting in the least! I expected a family play with feel good songs and got men is Speedo's. The content was fabulous however and it was great catching a glimpse of what life was like way before my time. The actors did a phenomenal job putting on the production and I was so impressed by one of my friends from high school and had a role in the play! The nudity right before the intermission threw me off a great deal as did some of the sexual content. As I said Hair was nothing like what I expected but was executed wonderfully. Bless the actors hearts for having to perform with little to no air. I look forward to going back to Trustus for a night out with friends or a date but I don't think I want to experience "Hair" again. :)

Puppetry

I had so much fun learning about puppets especially my favorites Kermit and that Pretty Miss Piggy! I remember waking up every single morning and watching the Muppets. They played a huge part in my childhood! & will always be my fav childhood toon.

Learning about the mechanics of puppetry was very cool to me. I had never taken the time to think about how Big Bird was operated. Todays class reminded me so much of my childhood! 2nd favorite after the Dance lecture!

Marionette Play

I caught the Marionette performance Saturday at the 11 showing with my best friend. Boy were we in for a treat! I thoroughly enjoyed the play but thought some of the lines were a little mature for the target audience. As a child hand puppets always frieghtened me so I welcomed the marionette. Marionette puppets seem to be so much better built.

Butterfly Art and Piano Comp

I was unable to attend the musical venue and make the butterfly art because of a family tragedy. Thank you so much for understanding Dr. Heid!

How Pretty are You! Edventure Butterflies

I told my aunt about going to EdVenture to see butterflies and she said "Oh Amber, you're gonna love it" and honestly I didn't believe her one bit. I saw this as just another class trip. But when I got in the exhibit and began taking the photos I was amazed! I felt like a little girl again and it was embarrassing and hard trying to contain my excitement at these beautiful little things. These pictures are now screensavers on my phone and laptop.

Give Me Dancing with Some Dirty on the Side

What an awesome class! As a dancer, definitely one of my favorite lectures! I've danced my whole life, its like an escape for me. As we watched the clips of Dirty Dancing with Patrick Swayze I was stunned! I had never seen dancing like that besides Grease. It was "dirty" but certainly clean for todays norms and I welcomed that! Watching the clip triggered my "dance gene" and it seemed like I couldn't get away to dance fast enough be it my car, home, or the dance studio, I just wanted to dance!

Then we got our *Shag* on! I was absolutely horrible at it! I've never been good at counting and dancing but oh my goodness, I was thoroughly disappointed at how awful I was being that I've danced my whole life. It is a nice dance but definitely not for me!

Favorite Poem

Like millions of other woman, my favorite poem is by the amazing Maya Angelou entitled "Phenomenal Woman" what an amazing poem celebrating womanhood. I even had the poem posted in my locker in high school. Here it is. My head still swells when I read it!

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I'm telling lies.
I say,
It's in the reach of my arms
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please,
And to a man,
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees.
Then they swarm around me,
A hive of honey bees.
I say,
It's the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me.
They try so much
But they can't touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them
They say they still can't see.
I say,
It's in the arch of my back,
The sun of my smile,
The ride of my breasts,
The grace of my style.
I'm a woman

Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

Now you understand
Just why my head's not bowed.
I don't shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
When you see me passing
It ought to make you proud.
I say,
It's in the click of my heels,
The bend of my hair,
the palm of my hand,
The need of my care,
'Cause I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

Tues June 8th Palmetto Portraits

I loved the display! I had never seen a display with just portraits taken by cameras. I was extremely impressed with the content it covered. Everyone was displayed from infants to older adults taking their last breaths. I thought the display was exquisite. However, I felt like the display lacked diversity. They consisted mostly of Caucasian and African American citizens. Also, I only saw two portraits with a dog or cat. I just wished they would have encompassed more nationalities and other walks of life like birds and other animals.

Description:I chose the portrait of two women. Taken in Charleston. The name of the portrait was Elizabeth Marie and Sarah Anne. I was intruqued by it because you could not tell if the two women were related or lovers or if one or both were pregnant. It was full of so many unanswered questions. I asked two classmates and both were confused as well. The portrait is one of two women holding hands. One seems pregnant and the other is in question. With the shirt she is wearing you can not tell.
Interpretation:It meant a great deal to me. It shows how easily something can get misconscrewed. The portrait leaves a great deal of unanswered questions so the viewer is left to come to his or her own conclusion. It is like this everyday in real life, one is constantly making judgements based on what he or shee sees without knowing the full story. This was the only portrait that made me really think and I loved it!
Evaluation: I liked the clarity of the portrait, it was flawless and I did like that it made me think analytically. I also liked that it displayed a life lesson through a photograph of two women.

Museum Tapesties

Monday June 7th Kandinsky Painting.

I believe it is an abstract painting because the artist is using lines to to convey a meaning that is not easily expressed. He seems to be obsessed with sadness. Although colorful, the painting seems to be very upset. The painter is Kandinsky. The meaning behind this work is very difficult for me to find. I believe it to be taking the many elements of life and making it them sad. To me it signifies that there is a good and bad consequence to everything. He could have used the same elements and objects but could have given the work a positive feeling. I think what he is conveying is very real and relatable.

Assignment 3- Architecture

I can not comment a great deal on this blog because I did not attend class that day. However I have visited the Trinity Cathedral years ago and I was astounded at the attention to detail and the grandeur of the cathedral. I remember walking in with the group I was with and being absolutely astounded at the Gothic structure.

Assignment 2- Art Class

I thought the boomwackers where a novel idea and I thoroughly enjoyed making music with them. Although I will not teach, I learned a great deal about music and notes in class. I've always wanted to read music and in class I learned some of the basics. The important thing about music to me is that I can connect with it. The music must be relatable. I love to study with music but many times it is not effective because I may get up and beging dancing. I study with the music on so I won't have silence or if I'm in the library so I won't hear everyone else's conversation. I believe music influences our lives in every way. It is difficult to say exactly how.
A concert I most remember is one I went to years ago when with my favorite gospel singer Deitrick Haddon. I remember it so vividly because he did not put on a production like I thought he would. His stage was just him and his musicians and he wore a white tee shirt with black jeans and converse. However, it was the best concert I had ever been to. He got away from the glamour aspect of the business and just showcased his raw talent and that was awesome to see.
I listen to gospel and pop the most. I would pay alot of money to see Deitrick again. I really love him.

Assignment 1

I have made a great deal of art. My favorite is painting because many times the work isn't so simple to detect. I have made a drawing before and it came out pretty well. It was of a koala and although the dimensions were wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed making it. It has been at least 5 years since I've been to a museum. A year since I went to an art gallery and I've never been to am atist studio. I've never been in a formal play outside of church, nor opera or art film. I dance often. I try to dance at least 4 times a week. I love it. I generally learn best from powerpoints and little group interaction. I am taking this class because it is required for my Public Health major. The only art that has moved me is dance. It's my escape from everything. Many things inspire me like the beautiful atmosphere outside on some days or the gloomy look of rainy days and my baby brother also inspires me.
Art is the simplest form of self expression to me and it encompasses so much. I seldomly consider movies, video games, or comics at. Television does have some of the makings of being art and music is always art in my opinion. I believe the individual person decides what is good and bad art based on their personal opinions. When debating music and movies with friends I consider many things. With music I look for the content of the lyrics and the voice. With movies I pay attention to the acting and if it believable or not. I also look at the picture quality. The best movie of last year in my opinion was The Dark Knight. I loved everything about it. An art film is a film showcasing only art. Many genres of music is on my music player. Gospel, pop and country are the ones I listen to most.
